The Comprehensive Guide to Setting Up Your First Aquaponics System

Living in the city has its challenges, especially when it comes to space. But I’ve always been drawn to the idea of being self-sufficient, so I began to research and experiment with different ways of growing my own food. That’s when I discovered aquaponics, which is a system that combines aquaculture and hydroponics.

With aquaponics, I’m able to grow vegetables and fish in the same closed system. The fish produce waste that is then converted into nutrients for the plants, and the plants in turn help to clean the water for the fish. It’s a symbiotic relationship that allows me to grow fresh produce and fish right in my own small place.

Step 1: Choose a suitable location for your aquaponics system. You’ll need a space that has access to electricity and water, and is free from extreme temperature fluctuations and direct sunlight.

Step 2: Decide on the size of your system. This will depend on the space you have available and how much produce you want to grow. Start with our basic system.

Step 3: Choose your fish and plants. The fish you choose will depend on the size of your system and the water conditions you can maintain. Some common choices for aquaponics include tilapia, catfish, and trout. For plants, you can grow anything from herbs and lettuce to tomatoes and cucumbers.

Step 4: Purchase your materials. You’ll need a fish tank, grow bed, water pump, air pump, and tubing for your system. You may also need additional equipment depending on the size and complexity of your setup. contact us and look into our page for all equipment you might need.

Step 5: Set up your fish tank and grow bed. Your fish tank should be filled with water and treated with an aquarium conditioner to remove any chlorine or chloramines. Your grow bed should be filled with a growing medium such as hydroton or gravel. (optional, depending on what system are you looking for)

Step 6: Install your water and air pumps. Your water pump will circulate water from your fish tank to your grow bed, while your air pump will provide oxygen to your fish.

Step 7: Add your fish to the system. Be sure to follow the recommended stocking density for your chosen fish species and monitor your water quality closely. PLEASE make sure your conditions are stable and suitable for your fish as it will make it way easier for your system to not crash and burn. this is probably where most novice aquarists crash without having even really started. patience is key.

Step 8: Add your plants to the system. You can either start with seeds or seedlings, and place them in the growing medium in your grow bed/canister.

Step 9: Monitor and maintain your system. You’ll need to check your water quality regularly and make adjustments as needed. You may also need to add additional nutrients to your system depending on the plants you’re growing.

Step 10: Harvest your produce and enjoy! Once your plants have matured, you can start harvesting your own fresh produce right from your aquaponics system.

Tools needed:

  • Fish tank (remember to look at available space and how many fish are recommended per size of tank)
  • Grow bed
  • Water pump
  • Air pump
  • Tubing
  • Aquarium conditioner
  • Growing medium (e.g., hydroton, gravel)
  • Fish food
  • pH test kit
